U of T Scarborough Students Rally Against the Ford Government

Liberal Leadership Candidate Mitzie Hunter joins post-secondary students in their fight

TORONTO – Students at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus are taking on the Ford Government with a Youth Rally that occured on Monday, September 16th, 2019 at the Scarborough Campus (UTSC).

In a show of solidarity with post-secondary students, Ontario Liberal Leadership Candidate Mitzie Hunter announced her plans to future-proof Ontario by investing in post-secondary education and supporting students.

Through smart, effective policies that recognize the value of education, we can help Ontario’s students succeed. Mitzie’s plan to invest in post-secondary education will reduce barriers for students and promote equal opportunities for education and affordable student housing.

Here are a few points from Mitzie’s plan to “future-proof” Ontario:

  • $750 million to support low-income students
  • Increasing the interest-free grace period to 2 years
  • Removing the +1% prime rate
  • Returning democracy to campuses across Ontario through student fees
  • OHIP mental health coverage for people under 30

Doug Ford is pushing post-secondary education out of reach for so many. Mitzie’s vision will bring education back into reach and make it more accessible for all Ontarians, not just higher-income earners.

As the former Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Development, Mitzie is extremely concerned about access to post-secondary education as well as the mounting pressure being placed on students during their pursuit of higher education and once they have completed their studies. As an UTSC alumni, this is where her leadership campus campaign tour begins to meet with youth, listen to their concerns and plan for change in 2022.
