Mitzie Hunter Declares Her Bid To Lead The Ontario Liberal Party

Liberal MPP is campaigning on Affordability and Opportunity to take down Ford

For Immediate Release

Toronto, ON (August 14th, 2019) – Liberal MPP Mitzie Hunter announced her intention to run for the leadership of the Ontario Liberal Party tonight to a packed gymnasium of enthusiastic supporters in her Scarborough-Guildwood riding. “It was just over six years ago that I chose to run in this community,” said Hunter, “And it’s only fitting that I return to kick off my leadership run and set my goal of becoming the next premier of Ontario.”

Most recently, she took on the Ford government’s decision to cancel Canada Day celebrations at Queen’s Park and organized the successful “People’s Picnic” on the front lawn. Hunter is a leader who makes bold decisions and acts on them.

“I’ve been energized about taking the fight to Doug Ford,” Hunter told the crowd. “He has cut the things Ontarians value most – like health care and education – without cutting the deficit. He’d rather waste millions fighting Ottawa than fight climate change.”

Hunter’s strong leadership will provide solutions to the many challenges our province must overcome as a result of Ford government’s mismanagement of the economy and lack of investment in Ontario’s future.

Her vision is grounded on two principles: Affordability and Opportunity

  • Investment in students and education system to achieve 90% graduation rate
  • Online education for post-secondary and employee retraining that includes Ontarians in the rural areas and those balancing a job and growing a family
  • Expansion of OHIP+ to cover mental health for youth under 30 years old
  • Financial assistance and support to the growing number of at-home caregivers
  • Job creation for a skilled workforce by converting shut-down manufacturing plants into attractive hubs for tomorrow’s economy of advanced manufacturing, technology research and entrepreneurship
  • Reboot of the Liberal Party by knocking on 1 million doors by 2022 to get ready to bring down the Ford government.

Hunter was one of seven Liberals re-elected last June. The Ontario Liberal Party will hold its leadership convention on March 7th at the International Convention Centre in Mississauga, Ontario.
